Culture: Kenneth Davids (editor of CoffeeReview) says
this of coffee, “alcohol typically makes us want to eat,
fight, make love, dance, and sleep, whereas coffee
encourages us to think, talk, read, write, or work.”
In the seventeenth century, English coffeehouses
were called “penny universities,” the Turks called
theirs “schools of the wise.” Since the beginning
of the coffeehouse, it has been a breeding ground
for art and intellect. Sadly, many cafes have
abandoned that for the drive thru and tiny,
crammed establishments designed for “in & out”
traffic. Such cafes usually make customers feel
unwelcomed and rushed. JavaCat-5 was designed
with the original coffeehouse concept in mind. Each
month we feature a different local artist. Artists
have ranged from professionals, to college students,
to elementary students and we’ve showcased glass
pieces, sculptures, drawings, paintings, photography,
digital art, and many other forms of art. Aside from
that we feature poetry readings, live music, and
ESU’s Socrates Café.

We are part of our community: We participate in Emporia High School’s Band Card, Spartan Card, and Most Valuable Attitude Awards, Emporia State University’s Block Party and Socrates Café, Emporia Main Street’s Great American Flea Market and Annual Fundraising Auction, and Live in the Lot, along with other events and fundraisers.
